Minivans have been popular for more than two decades, thanks in part to their cargo space, person capacity and comfort. For the 2007 model year, this segment of family favorites continues to expand with several brand-new models, models that have been substantially revamped, as well as new options in full-size vans.
However, many of the current minivan offerings were introduced during the 2004 model year.
DaimlerChrysler gave their 2007 minivans a makeover in 2004. The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan— received major revisions over predecessor models.
For 2004 Nissan debuted the redesigned Quest minivan, and Toyota, which began selling its second-generation feature-laden Sienna, added all-wheel drive to this popular minivan.
Meantime Ford replaced the Windstar with the Freestar. The Freestar's twin, the Mercury Monterey, returned as a minivan to Mercury's lineup after the Villager was dropped a couple years ago.
Honda got into the act as well with its popular Odyssey getting a major redesign for the 2007 model year. Saturn and Buick started selling their first minivans for 2007—the Relay and Terraza, respectively.
Saturn and Buick weren't the only brands with new minivans from General Motors for 2007. Chevrolet's Uplander replaced the Venture, and Pontiac introduced the all-new 2007 Montana SV6.
Seats, Seats and More Seats
The highlight of minivans is their seats—not just
how many there are but their three-row arrangement,
upright seat posture, easy entry and exit, good
headroom for passengers and good views.
Typical minivans are equipped with two front seats, middle-row seats that can accommodate two or three people, and third-row seats that accommodate up to three people, for a maximum vehicle capacity of eight people. Chrysler's Pacifica, which arguably is not quite a minivan, has only six-passenger capacity because there are only two seats per row. Larger, full-size vans can carry more than eight passengers.
But minivans also provide another benefit: room for cargo.
Cargo Space Expansion
The first minivans, introduced in 1983 by what was
then the Chrysler Corporation, required that seats
be removed from the vehicle for maximum
cargo-carrying space.
But by 1999 Honda's Odyssey became the first minivan to feature third-row seating that remained in the vehicle and still provided a flat cargo floor and commendable cargo space.
The second-generation Odyssey debuted with a third-row bench that could be stowed into a deep well built into the rearmost floor of the vehicle. Since then, other minivans such as the Mazda MPV have copied this feature.
For 2004 the Freestar and Monterey joined the other vans and added stowable third-row seats. The new Chrysler minivans, meanwhile, feature both second- and third-row seats that can fold down individually into the floor in what the company calls "Stow-n-Go" seating.
Safety First
Because they often carry the most fragile
cargo—youngsters—minivans have been on the front
line of safety.
Today's minivans can be equipped with everything from electronic stability control that helps correct skids before they occur, tire pressure monitors that alert a driver of a deflating tire, head-curtain airbags that can provide head protection in a side or rollover crash, to all-wheel drive that can aid traction in snowy road conditions.
Some minivans, such as Toyota's Sienna, even offer an optional rearview camera mounted above the rear license plate. This camera displays images on a dash-mounted screen to reveal obstacles behind the vehicle, providing additional views for the driver while backing up.
The redesigned Town & Country features a knee blocker airbag for the driver. In particular types of crashes this airbag deploys and helps the driver stay properly positioned behind the steering wheel-mounted airbag. It also provides additional leg protection.
Lots of Other Features
Minivans are typically offered with V6 engines and
can be outfitted with all types of amenities.
DVD-based entertainment systems allow rear-seat passengers to view movies or play video games as they travel. Rear-seat riders can also listen to music different from what's playing on the audio system up front.
Nissan's Quest minivan feels particularly airy inside with its optional SkyView roof, which features four glass ceiling panels and front sunroof.
Another Quest option: a navigation system with a 7-inch display screen and a bird's eye setting for a map display that provides views of what's coming up on the horizon—a park, a river, an airport, etc.
Then there's the Chrysler Town & Country, arguably the most luxurious minivan on the market. Standard features include leather seats, tri-zone climate control, power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, a power rear liftgate, power sliding side doors, power windows and door locks, and remote keyless entry.
Full-Size Vans
For anyone serious about moving more than eight
passengers at one time, the full-size passenger van
remains a vehicle of choice. Passenger vans are
commonly used around airports, shuttling people to
hotels and parking lots.
Full-size vans comprise a small market—let's face it, most families don't need to shuttle eight occupants at a time. Sales of full-size passenger vans and cargo vans combined account for less than two percent of all new vehicle sales in the U.S., with large Ford models outselling the closest competitor 2 to 1.
Full-Size Passenger Van News
There are so few entries in this segment that it's
unusual when a new design comes along. In 2003
Dodge discontinued the
Ram Wagon and added the
Sprinter Wagon.
A market leader in its segment in Europe, the Sprinter Wagon is a DaimlerChrysler commercial vehicle now sold in the U.S. as a Dodge model. DaimlerChrysler describes the Sprinter as a vehicle that sets a new standard in the commercial vehicle market with a unique combination of fuel-efficiency and functional interior design. Sprinter was first sold in the U.S. under the Freightliner brand.
Prior to the Sprinter, the most recent changes in the full-size cargo van category were from General Motors, in the shape of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana. Both vans received extensive restyling inside and out in 2003, adding the availability of all-wheel drive and access doors on both sides of the van.
