Vehicle Overview
Initially assembled by Freightliner, the full-size Sprinter van adopted a Dodge nameplate in early 2003. The van now competes in a class with the Chevrolet Express, Ford Econoline Wagon and GMC Savana. For 2008, the 12-passenger van includes an emergency exit window. An electronic sliding door is available on cargo and passenger vans.

For 2007, Dodge made the Sprinter wider, taller and longer, added two new engines and increased cargo and towing capacity. Changes for 2008 are comparatively minor.

Designed specifically for commercial applications, the Sprinter is built on one of two wheelbases. Sprinters can have a 65- or 76.4-inch-high roof, or what Dodge calls the mega roof, which provides 84 inches of walk-through height. Sprinters come in 2500 (three-quarter-ton) and 3500 (one-ton) ratings, but only the 2500 series includes a passenger model.

Exterior
A large grille incorporates the Dodge Ram logo. Sprinters ride on one of two wheelbases, 144 or 170 inches, and are 233, 273 or 289 inches long overall. The back doors open to the vehicle's full height and swing open 270 degrees. One-touch, triple-flash turn signals and wide-angle mirrors are standard. An electronic sliding door is new for both the cargo and passenger van for 2008. The passenger van now includes an emergency exit window.

Sprinters have an independent front suspension, rear leaf springs and power rack-and-pinion steering.

Interior
Up to 12 occupants fit inside a passenger-carrying Sprinter. Two people sit up front and as many as three more rows of seats can be installed. A standard, removable four-seat rear bench is new for cargo vans. For 2008, all models can have swivel bucket seats in front. Sprinters have a flat cargo floor and tapered rear wheel housings. Cargo volume is 127 cubic feet, though overall cargo capacity can swell to 600 cubic feet in some models. Air conditioning is standard. Other features include a tilting and height-adjustable steering wheel, a CD player and power windows and locks.

Under the Hood
Two new engines were introduced for 2007: a 154-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 diesel and a 254-hp, 3.5-liter gasoline V-6.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes are standard, as is an electronic stability system. The system adjusts for how the Sprinter is loaded and adjusts its inputs to compensate. Side-impact and side curtain airbags are also available. ; come to the Image Rent A Car and reserve the genuine product today!

First introduced in Europe in 1995 by Mercedes-Benz, where it has been highly successful, the Sprinter van Rental is intended to complement Freightliner Van Rentals existing line of Class 3 to 6 walk-in van chassis products, which the company said captured 65 percent of the North American diesel van market in 2000. The Sprinter will be available in three basic configurations--cargo van, passenger van and cab chassis--each with three wheelbase lengths, two GVWs and two roof heights. Applications include parcel, package and general delivery; passenger transportation for municipalities, airports and shuttle services; and light construction plus a full range of applications from utilities to landscaping.

The cargo van wheelbase lengths are 118 in., 140 in. and 158 in., while the interior roof heights are 64 in. (standard) and 73 in. (high roof model). The standard vehicle has a GVWR of 8550 lb. with 4123 lb. of cargo capacity; it is also available with a 9990 lb. GVW rating for a payload capacity of 5105 lb.

The 10-person capacity Sprinter passenger van will be available in the same wheelbase lengths and roof heights as the cargo van, as well as an 8550 lb. GVWR. Both the cargo van configuration and the passenger version are available, with a cab chassis version, which can be fitted with a flatbed, dump, or service or utility body, set to debut next year. A two-passenger cab chassis will be available in two GVWR configurations--an 8550 lb. vehicle with a choice of 118, 140 or 158 in. wheelbase lengths, and a 9990 lb. vehicle available with 140 and 158 in. wheelbases. Their roof heights will be a standard 85 in. and 86 in., respectively.

The heart of the Sprinter van Rental powertrain--and its most productive differentiator--is its Mercedes-Benz OM 612 DELA five-cylinder in-line, turbocharged-intercooled diesel engine, which is designed to deliver improved fuel economy, longer maintenance intervals and better durability. The common rail, direct injection engine has a 156 hp at 3800 rpm rating, with a maximum 244 lb.ft. of torque at 1400 to 2400 rpm. The four-stroke, four valves per cylinder, 2.7 L (88 mm bore x 88.4 mm stroke) engine is matched with an M-B five-speed automatic transmission.

According to the company, the Mercedes engine will allow the Sprinter to perform like a V-8 gasoline engine, yet provide customers with a smooth running van with greater fuel economy. The company said that the Sprinter will receive the federal LEV rating certification in April 2002. And in October 2003, Freightliner Van Rentals will have a Sprinter model meeting the requirements of the five states having CARB certification requirements (California, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine).

Other Sprinter features include four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Acceleration Skid Control, rack and pinion power steering, and sharp sloping hood and large windshield for excellent forward and side visibility,

The vehicle is assembled in Freightliner Van Rentals's Gaffney, S.C., plant, which has undergone a $12 million expansion in preparation for Sprinter production, and will have the capacity to produce 30 vans per shift when fully operational.The Sprinter van Rentals will be assembled, sold and serviced in North America under the Freightliner Van Rentals nameplate. At this writing, a dedicated Freightliner Van Rentals light commercial dealer network--with dedicated facilities and resources--was being established in large metropolitan markets in the U.S. and Canada.
