Cheap Car Rentals and Caleb Smith State Park
Located in Smithtown, this state park will take you back in time. The park itself is nestled in a suburb, but it is like going back to the pioneer days of Long Island. It provides hiking, cross-country skiing nature trails, and fishing within its boundaries. It is a refuge for wildlife and a place for people to get a better understanding of nature. Here there are freshwater wetlands, ponds, streams, fields, and woods. Take your cheap car rental to Smithtown to experience Caleb Smith State Park. The park was part of the land of the Nesaquake Indians. In 1663, the Smith family leased the land from the Indians and began to farm on it. The river that runs through Caleb Smith State Park was a popular place to fish. In 1888 the Brooklyn Gun Club began buys parcels of land and allowing the fields to return (for gaming). In 1963, the property was finally purchased by the state and turned into a state park in 1974.
The park is open all year from 8:00a.m. to sunset. It is closed Mondays from April to September, and it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays the rest of the year. There are no pets allowed all year. There is parking available for your cheap car rental.
Feel Nature as You Explore the Park
When you visit the park with your cheap car rental, be sure to start at the Smith farmhouse. This is where the park headquarters are located, with a nature museum on the first floor.
You can begin your exploration of the park with the hiking trail located just behind the farmhouse. The Yellow Trail begins in the herb garden where the Smiths would have grown medicinal, dying textiles, and culinary herbs. Next you pass a meadow. In the summer there is the sweet scent of Japanese honeysuckle. In the small field you will find wildflowers and sparrows. The trail takes you to the woods, past fruit bushes and wild vines. Be careful in the woods! There is poison ivy there! If you are lucky, you might see a box turtle, a common turtle on Long Island. You might feel like the trail is getting a bit damper. That is because you are approaching the river. In the spring this is a breeding spot for tree frogs, salamanders, and spring peepers. The pond is home to trout, bluegill, pumpkinseed, and largemouth bass. Now you are ready to explore other trails.
