The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum is located in Cold Spring Harbor on the north side of Long Island not too far from Oyster Bay. Here you can discover the maritime life on Long Island by exploring a 19th century whaleboat, whaling history exhibits, conservation exhibits, a family activity center, films, and much more! Their mission is to collect, preserve, and exhibit objects and documents that are important to whaling, especially the regional whaling history of Long Island, whale conservation, and the history of Cold Spring Harbor as a maritime port. Come out to Cold Spring Harbor with your passenger van rental to learn more about whaling.
A Controversial Practice
Whaling has been considered very controversial because of poor conservation management of this industry. Commercial whaling began in the United States in the 18th and 19th century. The Atlantic states were responsible for much of the whaling taking place, especially New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Nantucket Island. The major reason for whaling in the United States was because the whale fat was used to make lamp oil that was common at the time. Whale meat was not popular, so most of the unused parts of the whale were thrown back into the sea. However, the discovery of petroleum in Pennsylvania in the late 19th century led to the decline of whaling in the United States because kerosene was used for lamps instead of whale fat. Very few countries still practice whaling, but you can see this part of history when you visit the Whaling Museum at Cold Springs Harbor with your passenger van rental.
One of a Kind
The museum has been in the area for three generations, opening in 1942. It is the only museum of its kind on Long Island that is open all year and dedicated to the whaling history of the region. They have 6000 artifacts that document the maritime history of the local area and Long Island. Unique features include a fully-equipped 19th century whaleboat with its original gear and a scrimshaw collection. The museum also features whaling implements, ship's gear, navigational aids, ship models and maritime art. You can learn more about this tradition when you visit the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum with your passenger van rental.
