Madison Square Garden is a multi-use arena in New York that is used for many different events. It is located over Penn Stations, so it is very easy to find with your New York car rental. Boxing has a long history at the Garden. Some of the biggest fights in boxing were held here before some promoters moved to Las Vegas. There were many Joe Louis fights, the Roberto Duran-Ken Buchanan affair happened here, and the first and second Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali fights.
The New York Police Academy holds its annual graduation here, and it has also been the New York site of annual Grammy Awards.
Directions
Madison Square Garden is located on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets. If you are coming with your New York car rental, take any of the bridges, tunnels, or road from outside Manhattan. There is parking at 230 West 31st Street, 325 West 34th Street, and 441 9th Avenue. It might be easier to take the subway or train. This way you do not have to worry about parking your New York car rental. The train will take you right to Penn Station at Madison Square Garden. Or, take the 1, 2, or 3 (Seventh Avenue Lines), A, C or E (Eighth Avenue Subway) to 34th Street/Penn Station. There is also B, D, F, N, Q, R or Path to 34th Street/Avenue of the Americas (one block walk).
Future Plans
The owners of Madison Square Garden, Cablevision, has plans to add to the complex. If it is accepted, a new Garden would be built at the western end of the James Farley Post Office across the street. There would be wide concourses with stores and restaurants, luxury boxes with better sight lines, a museum, and a hall of fame. The current Garden would be torn down and replaced with an office tower.
