There are twenty miles of trails that attract hikers, bikers, and cross-country skiers. Swimmers will enjoy the Great South Bay for its beaches, as well as the swimming pool complex that is in the park. There are also picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, playing fields, a playground, and 69 camp sites. The pavilion is by permit only. Keeping Busy
There is a lot to do at Heckscher State Park to keep you busy during your stay with your Van Rental. You might wonder why time flew by so fast! There is a beach, a camper recreation area, hiking trails, picnic tables, a pool, tent and trailer sites, biking trails, fishing, nature trails, a playground, recreation programs, boat launch sites, playing fields, food, and showers. In the winter you can also do some cross-country skiing. Dogs are allowed, but only in the undeveloped area on a leash no longer than 6 feet. They are not allowed in the camping, bathing, or picnic areas. The park is open all year, from 7:00a.m. to sunset.
Directions
Heckscher State Park is located at the end of the Heckscher State Parkway, about 50 miles from Manhattan on the south shore of Long Island. It is found within the East Islip/Great River Area in Suffolk County and is very easy to get to with a Van Rental.
Local Attractions
Once you are in the Islip area, there is plenty to do here. Whether you drive up in with your Van Rental or fly into Macarthur Airport and rent a cheap car from there, there is plenty to keep you busy in the area. Visit the Long Island Maritime Museum in nearby West Sayville where you can explore the maritime activities of the area in the past on the Great South Bay. They feature seamen's crafts, shipwreck artifacts, boating equipment, ship models, and Long Island shellfish overlooking the Fire Island Lighthouse and Captree Bridge. The Oyster House demonstrates how oysters were processed, which was West Sayville's main industry until the hurricane of 1938 wiped the industry out.

Macarthur Airport is the most convenient airport in the New York metro area to travel to New York. It is serviced by six airlines, including ATA, Continental, Delta, Northwest Airlines, Southwest, and U.S. Airways. There are a variety of Full Size Van Rentals available on Long Island.
