Valley Stream State Park is a great place for families who want to visit a day-use park in the area just east of Jamaica Bay in Valley Stream on Long Island. There are picnic areas with tables, fireplaces, and grills; play areas for kids; horseshoe, volleyball, basketball, and bocce ball courts; baseball fields; nature trails; and cross-country ski trails in the winter. An Oasis of Nature

Aside from the picnic areas, ball courts, and nature trails, there is plenty of other things to do in the park. There is a half-mile walking loop in the park with 15 stations for walkers to complete stretches and strengthening exercises. For kids, the Squirrel Nut and Hickory Nut nature trails allow children to explore nature in the park and learn a bit about it. Directions

Take the Southern State Parkway to the Town of Hempstead with your Van Rental. Get off at North Fletcher Avenue (Exit 14) a go toward Valley Stream/Elmont. Go north on Fletcher avenue until you reach Hendrickson Avenue and turn right. Turn left on East avenue with your Van Rental and go until you reach Sloan Drive South and turn left into the park.

There are many other parks in the area such as Hempstead Lake State Park, Bethpage State Park, Jones Beach State Park, Belmont Lake State Park, and Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park and Coe Hall Historic House Museum. When you visit Coe Hall with your Van Rental you will discover the former Gold Coast estate of the W.R. Coe family. There are over 400 acres of lawns, gardens, woodlands, and nature walks here, with a Camellia Greenhouse with the largest collection of camellias in the northeast. There is also a large collection of hibiscus, orchids, succulents, and other seasonal displays. Tours are available of the residence from April to September. Here you will have an idea of what life on Long Island was like in the 1920s (think of the Great Gatsby).
