Cheap Car Rentals and Hither Hills State Park
Located in Montauk, Hither Hills was named as one of Reserve America's Top Outdoor Locations in 2005 and it is easy to get to with a cheap car rental. There are scenic picnic areas with fireplaces, sport fishing, beachfront, playing fields, a playground, and 168 camp sites on the ocean. Anglers can fish all year, as well as obtain permits for night fishing. There are unique dunes called "walking dunes" in Napeague Harbor that are found on the eastern part of the park.
What to Do
Hither Hills State Park offers a lot for you to do once you get out of your cheap car rental. You can bring your dogs, but they are only allowed in certain areas of the park on a leash not more than six feet. They are not allowed in camping, bathing, and picnic areas, as well as in buildings or on walkways. There is a beach, a camper recreation area, hiking trails, picnic tables, recreation programs, biking trails, campsites, fishing, hunting, playgrounds, showers, a bridle path, food, nature trails, playing fields, tent/trailer sites. In the winter there is also cross-country skiing available. Empire Passports are accepted. You can call 1-800-456-CAMP to reserve your campsite for when you plan your trip to Long Island with your cheap car rental. Every Thursday from 9:30a.m. to 10:30a.m. there is also a sandcastle contest from the end of June to the end of August on the beach. Participants can use sand, water, and any other material that is found on the beach and is native. Families can enjoy organized recreation programs in the high season. These include family movies, folk & line dancing, children's summer theater, magic shows and various environmental interpretation programs.
Important Information Before You Go
- There are out of state fees for non-New York residents for this park.
- People who wish to rent a campsite must be at least 21 years old and must be present at the park at all times. Park staff will check ID when you check in.
- Each site can hold a maximum of six people per site.
- Only one reservation per family is available during the peak season, and seven-day reservations during the peak season begin on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
- Parking for your cheap car rental must be in the designated area. Campsites can only accommodate one RV and one tent or two tents.
- No fires are permitted during the peak season. There are strict rules for fires during the off-season.
- Quiet time is from 10:00p.m. until 8:00a.m. This is strictly enforced.
Directions
Hither Hills is 122 miles from Manhattan. Take the Long Island Expressway East to exit 70S with your cheap car rental. Then go south on Route 111 (Manorville Road) to Route 27 East (Sunrise Highway). Take Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) east to the park entrance on Route 27A (Old Montauk Highway). The park is located on your right side. Look for the signs after making the right turn onto the Old Montauk Highway.
