Brooklyn Car Rentals and the Hudson River

The Hudson River is a river running through New York State that partly forms the border between New York and New Jersey. It was called the Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk in Mahican, the language spoken by the natives who lived in the area before it was settled by the Europeans. It means "the river that flows both ways". Today the river is named for Henry Hudson, and Englishman who explored the area in 1609. Early European settlement tended to cluster around the river. The beauty of the river inspired the Hudson River School of paining, a type of early American pastoral idyll. If you are nearby with a Brooklyn car rental stop and take a look at this beautiful river.

The source of the Hudson River is Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains in northeastern New York. However, it is known by different names until it reaches Tahawus at Henderson Lake. The Hudson flows into the Atlantic Ocean between Manhattan and New Jersey, forming New York Harbor. Strong tides make the New York Harbor difficult to navigate, and it is even more dangerous in the winter when ice floats develop.

If you would like to take your Brooklyn car rental for a drive along the Hudson, there are some notable landmarks. For example, there is West Point, the New Jersey Palisades, Hudson River Islands State Park, Liberty State Park. The Hudson Valley is very beautiful to look at if you decide to drive through it with your Brooklyn car rental. It is sometimes called the "American Rhine", and was designated as one of the American Heritage Rivers in 1997.
