Valley Stream State Park is a great place for families who want to visit a day-use park in the area just east of Jamaica Bay in Valley Stream on Long Island. There are picnic areas with tables, fireplaces, and grills; play areas for kids; horseshoe, volleyball, basketball, and bocce ball courts; baseball fields; nature trails; and cross-country ski trails in the winter. This is a great place for kids because there are trails for them to explore nature in the park. It is located very close to the John F. Kennedy Airport with a cheap car rental.
An Oasis of Nature
Aside from the picnic areas, ball courts, and nature trails, there is plenty of other things to do in the park. There is a half-mile walking loop in the park with 15 stations for walkers to complete stretches and strengthening exercises. For kids, the Squirrel Nut and Hickory Nut nature trails allow children to explore nature in the park and learn a bit about it. In the winter this is a great place to do some cross-country skiing, so be sure to bring your equipment in your cheap car rental! They are open all year except for Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Directions
Take the Southern State Parkway to the Town of Hempstead with your cheap car rental. Get off at North Fletcher Avenue (Exit 14) a go toward Valley Stream/Elmont. Go north on Fletcher avenue until you reach Hendrickson Avenue and turn right. Turn left on East avenue with your cheap car rental and go until you reach Sloan Drive South and turn left into the park.
