Cheap Car Rentals and Argyle Lake State Park
Located in Babylon on Long Island, Argyle Lake State Park is on the South Shore in Suffolk County. It is easy to get to with a cheap car rental, just south of the Long Island Railroad tracks and north of the Montauk Highway (Route 27).
Argyle Lake Park is located very close to the busy village. Within the park there are many activities to keep you busy. Anglers will want to visit early in the springtime because there is a strong run of yellow perch that occurs on the north end of the lake. Trout hatcheries provide more fishing in the spring and the fall for the community. There are also largemouth bass in the 15-18 range. The maximum depth to fish at is 4 feet, but you will find brown bullhead, sunfish, yellow perch, carp, brown trout, and rainbow trout in addition to those species already mentioned. The Globetrotters of Baseball
Argyle was once famous because it was home to America's first black professional baseball team, formed in 1885. They were called the ?Athletics of Babylon?. They were able to beat all the white baseball teams in the area. The team was known as the ?Cuban Giants? because at that time it was more acceptable to be Cuban than to be black in professional sports. This is a very interesting part of the history of professional sports in New York.. The Cuban Giants went on to become the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball when a New Jersey promoter saw their talent. You can come relax in the same park they played with your cheap car rental.
The South Shore and Babylon
Babylon is a great place to visit with your cheap car rental. It was a popular destination for visitors from the city in the summer because of the great beaches here and the ferry to Fire Island. It had some of the greatest hotels on the South Shore of Long Island, but today those great hotels are gone and charming bed and breakfasts are more common. You can feel how quaint the town is when you walk through the village. It has Victorian-era light posts and brick walkways that you will travel past on your way to shopping, restaurants, and historic buildings.
Also near Babylon with your cheap car rental is Bethpage State Park. This park is best known for its golf. It was the site of the 2002 U.S. Open and was among Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses in 2005 for their Black Course. There are five courses offered to golfers, so every golfer will find something at their comfort level and enjoyment. This is a must-see place for all golfers!
Babylon is also known as the Gateway to Fire Island. This is because many ferries leave from here to the beautiful island, which is carfree in the summer (you'll have to leave your cheap car rental in Babylon). In the summer it is a beautiful and relaxing place that feels like it is a million miles from the city where you will have to walk, rollerblade, or bike to get around!
