History of US Passenger Vans

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

To date, the car rental industry in the United States has become a strong one, with up to 1.7 million vehicles within the total industry inventory.

This is a big jump from just about 135,000 cars that are for rent in 1965. From such simple data, it could be easily inferred that car rental in the country is really in demand. Passenger vans are accounting for a significant part of the industry, as many travelers come in group and find it more attractive and practical to hire bigger vehicles to accommodate more people.

Before the passenger vehicle rentals became the giant that the industry is now, it had its humbling and small beginnings. In the US, the idea to lease vehicles for rent started in 1916, when a Nebraskan businessman named Joe Saunders established a car rental business using a single Ford Model. By 1925, the idea boomed and Mr. Saunders operated his business in 21 states. He purchased mostly Chrysler cars. Unfortunately, the business had to fold in 1930 amid the historic Great Depression.

Another company was able to equal the initiative. In 1918, a Chicago-based businessman, Walter Jacobs leased Model T Fords in the city. By 1923, the company bloomed to become a $1-million company,

based on annual sales. In 1947, National Car Rental System started in Missouri. As the prospect of car leasing and car rental grew, many more vehicle rental businesses sprouted. Now, there are just too many of them that the competition is so intense and customers have more choices.

In the 1970s, many car rentals started using used cars for rentals. Such vehicles were also sold at cheaper prices. But the earning potential of vehicle rentals kept on growing. By 1980s, competition really went full blast and there were just too many rental firms around. Most of those businesses are still operational up to this time.

Passenger rental vans started to gain popularity because many groups began having the need to travel collectively. Many large families who are on vacations at other states or cities also started preferring renting vans instead of taking cars to save on costs. Businessmen and executives also started finding passenger van rentals economical and enjoyable for business and leisure trips. Most passenger van rental firms also deemed it necessary to include luxury vans in their fleets to attract more high-end customers.

Image Van Rentals is one of the most popular and most reliable passenger van rental firms around. Whether you are in need of a 15-seater passenger van or a smaller 12-seater vehicle, the company would surely be able to provide you with vans that are comfortable, fashionable, and in best condition. Image Van Rentals delivers passenger vans door-to-door especially for customers who are in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Florida. You could also pick up vehicles for rent at its locations at John F Kennedy Airport, East and South Hampton, Manhattan, and Crown Heights in New York; Newark Airport in New Jersey; and Orlando Airport, Miami Airport, West Palm Beach Airport, and Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida.

For many years the 3 main suppliers of small Class B motorhome base vehicles have been:

The Ford and Chevy are still very common amongst Class B manufacturers, but the Dodge Tradesman is no longer being produced.

In its place is the Dodge Sprinter van which has been brought over from Europe where it originated as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. An identical van is produced by Freightliner as well.

Gas Mileage

BIG CHIEF Entertainment for MARY Kay PromotionThese nifty rigs are rapidly becoming the choice of motorhome manufacturers and RVers alike for a number of reasons.

With today’s unreliable fuel prices, these vans can squeeze up to 22 miles per gallon on the road with their smaller diesel engines. It’s a feat that not many fully self-contained motorhomes can come close to matching.
Headroom, Roof Safety & Leaks

For the RVer, the fact that the Sprinter van comes from the factory with full standup interior headroom is a big plus. There are many advantages to having your headroom high right from the point of original design; safety being the foremost.

With the Ford or Chevy, when the high top fiberglass roof is installed, the original metal roof is cut away. This may seem like simple sheet metal, but in reality it is structural strength that you will be losing.Dodge Sprinter Van Rentals 10 Person Van & 12 Person Van

Many hours of careful engineering and testing took place to ensure that the structure of the standard cargo van was a safe and sound vehicle. Removing a large chunk of this well thought out structure is bound to affect how well it holds up in a rollover accident.

Installation of the fiberglass raised roof also goes against any aerodynamics testing of the original design. Admittedly, the majority of aftermarket roofs are nicely sloped, minimizing this issue. But in some instances, the high roof add-on presents quite an awkward looking package.

It’s well proven that wherever there’s a seam, odds are in at least some instances, there will develop a leak. Many fiberglass tops over time develop leaks at the DISNEY World Whatever You Dream Promotionpoint where they are joined to the remaining metal roof structure. These are leaks that can be quite a problem to cure, especially if rust gets ahold on the area.

Now with the Dodge Sprinter, you have a well-designed unit that requires no heavy structure modification to be nicely fitted out as a complete self-contained RV. This fact hasn’t been overlooked by the RV industry.

Sprinter Dealers

Here are just a few from a very long list of manufacturers who produce quality Class B motorhomes based on the Dodge or Freightliner Sprinter van:

With the economy floundering, if you’re in the market for a new RV, you might want to consider one of the Class B motorhomes based on the Dodge Sprinter chassis.

You’ll find a long-lasting diesel engine and a streamlined structure, that doesn’t require major modifying, a plus. Your more maneuverable investment will not only be stylish, it will also take you many miles in a comfortable and fashionable manner.

I know I’d sure enjoy traveling in such a complete yet small package.
