Land Rover has added some minor upgrades to the new 2010 Range Rover. One of the most noticeable upgrades is the headlamps but there a lot more than that. Range Rover has added 1,420 new parts into the 2010 Rover. The interior has also been enhanced. The cabin has been refined to a much more delicate and soothing atmosphere. The interior gets nicer woods (six varieties to choose from), softer leathers, and a 12 inch LCD screen in the center console. The 2010 Range Rover features subtle updates to the body, including a revised grille and bumper, along with a new LED indicator system in the headlights.

But look, forget all that.  Let’s talk power.

Motivation for the 2010 Range Rover will be provided by a choice of a 5.0 litre supercharged V8, producing an agreeable 380kW (510hp) and 625Nm (461lb-ft) of torque, or a naturally-aspirated 5.0 litre V8 making 276kW (375hp) and 508Nm (375lb-ft) of torque.

Land Rover says that despite the Range Rover’s new supercharged V8 making a good 29 percent more power and 12 percent more torque than previous, fuel consumption is improved by 7.3 percent, offering just 14.8 l/100km.

On the inside, there’s new leather trim to the headlining, pillar and door casings, and a new satin chrome-plated finish to the control buttons.

 A dual-view touch-screen display screen rests in the centre stack, while a configurable 12-inch TFT screen – which Land Rover claims is the world’s largest – features, well, where the instrument cluster would usually be.

 Your fuel allowance won’t be the only happy camper in the equation though, with emissions down 7.4 percent to 348g/km.  Camping enthusiasts can sleep under trees a little longer then.

Rangey fans can also look forward to upgraded Terrain Response and Stability Control systems and a new surround camera system to improve the parking process

Dream cars and luxury defy the economic gloom in Geneva

Despite the crisis, automakers have not given up on selling dreams at the Geneva Motor Show, which opened this week with an array of eye-catching cars that are always shinier, faster, and ever more expensive.

“Geneva has always been a bit special, somewhere between the provincial and the chic,” said Carlos da Silva, analyst at Global Insight.

Garish colors help to highlight the array of concept, sports and luxury vehicles, which are still one of the principal attractions for the 700,000 visitors expected during the show until March 15.

As the doors opened to the public, overcrowded trains were spilling visitors from around Europe into Geneva while roads to the

exhibition hall were jammed.

Sports cars with prices above 100,000 euros (125,000 dollars), such as the new Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 Super Veloce, inevitably capture minds in search of escape from economic gloom.

Crowds already pressed around the low slung, yellow sports car during the press preview, trying to imagine the effect of being slung by 670 horsepower to 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds.

The Murcielago is “more extreme and more exclusive than any other car,” Lamborghini’s chief executive, Stephan Winkelmann, claimed.

Not to be outdone, Aston Martin unveiled the One-77 sports car with a price tag of 1.0 million pounds (1.2 million euros, 1.4 million dollars).

Only 77 will be built and the company claims to have received queries from about 250 potential customers.

Aston Martin also revived the luxury Lagonda name with a brash four wheel drive vehicle on show in Geneva, to try to appeal to new markets in the Middle East, India and China.

“The Lagonda is the luxury car of the future,” said Aston Martin Chief Executive Ulrich Bez. It might not be available for another five years.

Porsche claimed that its new 911 GT3 — displayed in an evocative bright red — is “more powerful” and “more efficient”, while Ferrari sought some of the thunder with ever more sporting engines.

Meanwhile, young men with feather dusters toured the stands to ensure the cars never lose their shine and wipe off finger marks, while “hostesses” handed out brochures or simply posed by the cars.

“They make us dream,” said Marcello, a young Swiss visitor whose gaze was fixed intently on the vehicles.

Amid the dominant theme of fuel economy and environmentalism, the carmakers freely admit that they are trying to stir emotions as well.

“Cars are very important part of the human psyche, because they are symbols of pleasure and prestige,” explained Simon Rochefort, the sales manager of US newcomer Tesla.

The Californian company was presenting its electric-powered convertible sports car in Europe for the first time, trying to combine the zero emissions of an electric motor with the thrill of a Lamborghini or Porsche — and a 99,000 euro (124,000 dollar) price tag.

During a crisis “it’s even more important to dream,” said Frank Rinderknecht, owner of specialised Swiss firm Rinspeed, which presents a new and generally more outrageous concept car every year.

But this year Rinderknecht also sought to capture the mood of the moment by showcasing an array of environmental technology.

Even the elite end of the market is tentatively reaching out to the “ecologically correct”.

Bentley is trying out biofuels, which pollute less but are controversial because of their impact on crops, food prices and the amount of energy it takes to produce them.

Bentley’s chief executive, Franz-Josef Paefgen, admitted that the dreams might have reached their limits.

“It is a crisis that affects luxury cars as much as it affects other sectors,” he remarked

Sometime last year, a member of the House of Representatives openly boasted that he had expended over N100 million acquiring cars since he was elected into the House. The 35 year old member from one of the states in the North Central zone of the country was then barely a year in the House.

But the lawmaker is not alone in the business of acquiring cars. His colleagues in the House and even the Senate have formed the habit of acquiring choice cars running into millions of naira.

A visitor to the National Assembly car parks will think they are car dealerships as the latest model of cars such as Chrysler, Mazda, Toyota Prado SUVs, Toyota Lexus, Jaguar, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Lincoln Navigator, Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade, Hummer, Nissan Altima and Ford Explorer, Peugeot, and Honda amongst others can be found there.

The list is, indeed, endless.

While some members of the House cruise in exotic cars, others chose to ride in the controversial Peugeot 407 cars bought for committee oversight duties. Each of the Peugeot 407 cars was reportedly acquired for N6.1 million. The cars carry the official number plates of MHR (Member of the House of Representatives) or FL REP.

The manner of acquisition of the cars was investigated by the Ethics and Privileges Committee of the House, which submitted its report last week. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Others Related Offences Commission are still investigating the matter.

In the upper legislative chamber, a number of senators still ride in their Toyota Camry, which was also purchased for them to use in the execution of committee duties. The cars have special number plates FL SENATOR. The other cars bear “SENATOR”.

But some of the legislators do not bother to ride in the Peugeot cars, they prefer the exotic ones. For instance, Bukar Abba Ibrahim (the former governor of Yobe State) and Chimaroke Nnamani (former governor of Enugu State) ride in SUVs. The same goes for some of their other colleagues who were governors or ministers.

However, the four presiding officers, namely the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker still have Peugeot 607 and 407 Cars in their convoys though they ride in Mercedes Benz cars.

At the turn of democracy in 1999, the federal lawmakers were each given a 406 Peugeot car. But the policy to allocate cars to the 469 lawmakers changed in 2003 when former President, Olusegun Obasanjo introduced the monetisation policy.

With the policy in place, the legislators began to buy preferred choice cars for themselves.

Some of them do it in style as they go for customised number plates. For instance, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Dino Melaye has special number plates that bear the inscription “DINO”.

All his cars have special number plates with different figures. This is the same with Iorwase Herman Hembe, a legislator from Benue and vice chairman of the House Committee on Donor Agencies. His cars have “HEMBE” inscribed on their number plates.

There are many more others. But some of the principal officers in both chambers chose to have special number plates according to their ranking on the leadership ladder.

Interestingly, the money spent to acquire these vehicles can build skill acquisition centres for the unemployed in their constituencies.

Only last week, senators complained of extensive poverty in the land and consequently adopted a motion to investigate The National Poverty Eradication Programme.
