Mixing Work and Play

Friday, January 9th, 2009

15 passenger van rental for churchesEvery year our Church takes a relatively small group of people to a place where another Church needs a little help with some task or ministry. Working out the logistics, the airline flight, the lodging, the van rental and meal service and being prepared to provide the needed help is a job that begins a year or more in advance.

Our team usually consists of fifteen to twenty people, from teen-agers, who don’t get bent over sleeping bags on the floor, to “fully mature” adults who want everything from plenty of room in the vehicles to luxury accommodations at night. Finding the middle ground where everyone can be reasonably happy is the key to a successful adventure.

One thing we always do is provide plenty of sight-seeing and exciting activities away from the work. If, for example, we are spending a week at a small Church in Eastport, Maryland, you can be sure we will take time to tour the Naval Academy, ride a boat in the Annapolis harbor, and make a full-day side trip to the Nation’s Capitol. And whether we drive or take the train, to D. C., there is plenty of time to relax, and restore our calm for the return to work.

If your group decides to make such a trip, plan early, get those airline tickets before they get expensive (usually the earlier you book, the cheaper the flight), find a auto rental company that can supply comfortable vans for your group, and make the lodging accommodations the best you can afford. You’ll be glad you did!

We’ll just have to wait and see what comes of all this and who ends up getting a piece of the funding. At this point, it could be anyone.

More Industries Eligible for Bailout

Friday, January 9th, 2009

debt bail outBailing out banks, bailing out the auto industry, and now the U.S. Treasury just opened the door for financing more companies - who’s it going to be next? Through their broad guidelines on aiding the ailing auto industry, the Treasury just made it easier for more companies to get their cut of the bailout funding.

The new guidelines basically allow officials to provide funds to companies that are deemed to be important to making or financing cars. In short, this means that they can use money from the Troubled Asset Relief Program to fund loans above and beyond those already committed to GM, GMAC and Chrysler.

The scary thing about all of this is that it leaves the door wide open for other industries that will be able to make just as good of a case as to why they need the money. This could include industries such as those that make automotive parts in case they are unable to collect on the money owned by automakers. As the government begins funding more and more industries, the question is, where will the funding stop?

The guidelines for the government aren’t binding, so that leaves President-elect Obama plenty of room to decide who gets the money. Originally, the bailout was designed to buy assets from banks, but it has spiraled into so much more.

Currently, the treasury has provided $6 billion in aid to GMAC (the financing arm of GM) and up to 17.4 billion for GM and Chrysler - all from the $700 billion bank rescue fund.

The guidelines state “Treasury will determine the form, terms and conditions of any investment made pursuant to this program on a case-by-case basis. Treasury may consider, among other things, the importance of the institution to production by, or financing of, the American automotive industry.”

Since the Treasury decided to strike up a deal with GMAC, they’ve opened up a whole new can of worms. And the Treasury is claiming it is part of a broader program that will assist the industry in becoming financially viable.

We’ll just have to wait and see what comes of all this and who ends up getting a piece of the funding. At this point, it could be anyone.

Test Drive Before You Buy

Friday, January 9th, 2009

rent cadillac escaladeIt takes me about 6 months and a few hundred dollars to buy a new car. I only get one every five years, so I want the car I buy to be exactly what I am looking for. Long ago I gave up the “test drive” at the dealership. Taking a car out for a spin around the block, or less than 10-12 minutes on the road, doesn’t tell me much. I want to drive a car at least a hundred miles, and take it over some of the real roads around my town.

So I start about 3-6 months before I am ready to buy. I go to my local Image Rent A Car folks and execute a day rental for a model in which I am interested. I only have to go to Image Rent A Car to find everything I am looking for. In 24 hours, more or less, I can put that car on the freeway, in heavy traffic, on curvy roads in the country, and do any number of fast starts and stops or whatever comes to mind. I do that for a couple of week-ends each month and I am ready for the dealer visit.

It had been a long time since I had driven a Chevy. My last two cars, both of which I kept five years, were a Honda Accord and a Lexus. They were great cars. But, when I drove the 2008 Chevy Malibu, I found a car that one can truly llove. It was roomy, quiet, quick, efficient, and frugal. If I needed to zip, fine. If I wanted to make quick lane changes, fine. If I want to lay back and let her run, fine. I even though the body style was attractive, and I felt good buying “American.”

I know some folks are not going to go to that extent. Maybe they have a particular model they like and buy, period. I have a friend who is into Cadillac like that. Some folks just take the short test drive, buy, and wish later they had at least driven another model or brand. It a big decision, this car buying thing. Find one you can love.

At your car rental company you are going to find “new” (less than a few hundred miles many times) cars. You can drive them for a day, or two if you like. No salesman will be whispering in your ear (he likes it rather you will later or not). Drive it fast, drive it slow, put in six CD’s and see if it sounds right, check the brightness of the lights at night, you know, like it was your own car. Sound like a lot of work? Ok! Keep doing what you’ve been doing. Meanwhile, I’ll be lloving my new car for another three years before I visit the rental guy again.
