Brooklyn Car Rentals 15 Passenger Vans NYC and the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge one of the best ways to get to Manhattan with your Brooklyn car rental. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, stretching 5989 feet over the East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn. When it was finished, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the world's first steel-wire suspension bridge when it opened in 1883 and a great place to see with your Brooklyn car rental.

The bridge's construction began in early 1870, and it was completed 13 years later. The first day it was open, it saw 1800 vehicles and 150,300 people cross it. A week after it opened, there was a rumor that it was going to collapse, causing a stampede that killed 2 people.

Designed by John Augustus Roebling's firm, the architecture of the bridge is done in the Gothic style, with characteristic arches above the passageways through the stone towers. It has been lit at night since the 1980s to show it's beauty. It really is beautiful to look at from far away or while you are crossing it in your Brooklyn car rental.

Brooklyn Bridge New YorkWhen the bridge was built, aerodynamics of bridge building were unknown and the structures were untested. Many of the bridges that were built around the same time have been replaced or have collapsed, as the Tacoma Narrows Bridge showed us in the 1940s. Luckily, Roebling designed a bridge with a truss system that was six times as strong as he thought it needed to be. Even when it was discovered that the cables were not as high-quality as he wanted, he still determined that the bridge was four times as strong as it needed to be. Because of this the bridge was allowed to stand and it still stands today. Don't worry when you cross it with your Brooklyn car rental though! It is very safe!

Today the bridge carries six lanes of traffic for you to cross with your Brooklyn car rental, as well as separate walkways for pedestrians and bicycles. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places. During transit strikes in 1980 and 2005, the Brooklyn Bridge was used by people walking to work, with pictures of people flooding the bridge appearing on television screens.

Just recently there was a Cold War cache discovered in the bridge. The importance and reason for this cache are unknown, because the location was not likely to be secure in the event of a nuclear strike, but the cache contained food, medical supplies, and was apparently a bunker from the Cold War era. The Brooklyn Bridge is a convenient place to cross into Manhattan and see all of the places you dreamed about there - from Tiffany's to Broadway and much more.
