Cheap Car Rentals and Connetquot River State Park
Located in Oakdale on Long Island, this state park on 3473 acres is designated for the protection and propagation of the birds, fish, and animals that live on the land and in the water. The preserve has 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding, cross-country ski, and nature trails. While you are visiting with your cheap car rental, you may see deer and waterfowl, as well as rare nesting birds such as the osprey and rare plants such as trailing arbutus and pyxie moss. You may also want to bring your fishing gear in your cheap car rental: you can fish with a permit on the Connetquot River.
The park was at one time property of the South Side Sportsmen's Club, with a feeling of summer camp. Snedecor's Tavern was built in 1820 as a clubhouse for the club until 1973.
What You Can Experience Here
Attractions of Connetquot River State Park include a bridle path, nature trails, hiking, fishing, and a museum and visitors center. In the winter there is cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There is also a gift shop to visit and Empire Passports are accepted. The preserve is open all year. Guided walks and interpretive tours are available. They last two hours and take you two miles around the park. Many of the trails are wheelchair accessible. The longest one, the Blue Trail, is 8.5 miles long and goes across the park! Other nearby state parks include Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park, Heckscher State Park, Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, Nissequogue River State Park, and Governor Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course.
Important Information
A permit, which is free, is required to visit the park. You must get it before you visit the park with your cheap car rental. This can be done by writing a brief letter to Connetquot River State Park Preserve at PO Box 505, Oakdale, NY 11769. Be sure to give your name and address, what you wish to do in the preserve, and how many people will accompany you. You can also call 516-581-2100 for more information. Once you get there, an entrance fee of $1 per person is charged. The park is closed on Mondays. No pets are allowed in the park. Bathrooms are in the administration building, not too far from the parking lot for your cheap car rental, as well as at the fish hatchery.
Directions
From the western part of Long Island with a cheap car rental: take the Southern State Parkway east to exit 44 (Sunrise Highway). Then go east to the Preserve.
From the eastern part of Long Island with a cheap car rental: take the Sunrise Highway west to Oakdale. The Preserve is located on the north side of Sunrise Highway, just west of Pond Road.
Connetquot River State Park is truly a place where you can feel one with nature. It is a great place to go experience Long Island, even though it takes a little planning to get the permit.
