Car Rentals on Long Island and East Hampton Historical Sites
The East Hampton Historical Society operates several local historic sites and museums in the East Hampton area, easily accessible with a car rental on Long Island.
Osborn-Jackson House
Starting out on Main Street with your car rental on Long Island, the Osborn-Jackson House was probably built in 1723 by ?Deacon? Daniel Osborn. Additions were made until the 1960s when the last owner lived there, and it was donated to the village of East Hampton in 1977 for use as a museum. As one the few colonial houses still located in its original place on Main Street, it serves as a period house museum for the East Hampton Historical Society. It is open year round. Admission is free, but contributions are appreciated.
Clinton Academy
Next, stop at Clinton Academy with your Long Island car rental, which was one of the first private academies in New York State, constructed in 1784. It educated young men for college or careers, and young women in spiritual reading and being a lady. When the State of New York ended the chartered academy system, this building became a community centre, playhouse, and town office. There is also a wild flower garden behind the building maintained by the garden Club of East Hampton. This museum is open from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, or by appointment. Again, admission is free but contributions are appreciated.
Town House
Next door is Town House, which was built in 1731 and is the only surviving government building left from the Colonial period on Long Island. Here, officials would meet to pass local laws, collect taxes, maintain the church and schoolhouse, and any other related government business. It is also the oldest surviving one-room schoolhouse on Long Island. Here, students were taught reading, writing, and a little arithmetic. After 1845, this building had a variety of functions, including a meeting place, a barbershop, an interior decorator's studio, and welfare headquarters during the Great Depression.
Mulford Farm
This historic site is slightly farther from Main Street, but a quick drive with a car rental on Long Island. Constructed in 1721, it is one of the earliest intact barns in the state and it is recognized as a good example of the period's construction methods and materials. It was deemed the second most important eighteenth century barns in New York State.
Other Attractions
East Hampton is 14.5 square miles, so a car rental on Long Island is the best way to get around. Other attractions include the Montauk Indian Museum, Old Hook Mill, Deep Hollow Ranch (the oldest cattle ranch in America), and many others.
