CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV 2008
CADILLAC ESCALADE ESV 2008

Based on U.S. News editors' analysis of 68 leading automotive reviews and test drives, the 2008 Cadillac Escalade ranks #1 of 9 in Luxury Large SUVs.

The Escalade earns its premium, flashy reputation with unrivaled style and strong V8 power, along with a comfortable and luxurious interior. For a comparably luxurious and high performing SUV, consider the Mercedes Benz GL-Class. For a large luxury SUV with more off-road capabilities, consider the  Range Rover Sport.

The 2008 Cadillac Escalade is generally viewed as a swaggering, stylish SUV that offers a high level of luxury, good performance, and status. The Detroit Free Press calls it "the sexiest full-size SUV on the market," and adds that it is "an awesome Detroit offering that hits a bull's-eye in such important areas as horsepower and cabin design." The New York Times says that the Escalade, redesigned in 2007, "rides on a stronger and stiffer chassis and affords added sophistication, comfort and performance." Car and Driver  adds "If you like your bling on a grand scale, it doesn't get much grander than this."  After its redesign last year, the Escalade remains virtually unchanged for 2008.

The 2007 Escalade was named Best New American Car by Forbes and BusinessWeek ranks Cadillac as the best automotive company in customer service, awarding the company Customer Service Champion status. And while the reviewer at Cars.com says "I can't think of another big SUV I'd recommend more than this one," Car and Driver disagrees, rating it fourth among five "Top-Rung Sport-Utes" in a comparison test drive. Based on their long-term road test, Car and Driver says, "Ultimately, it's going to be that social-climbing draw and its abilities as an upscale tow rig that keep the Escalade moving off Cadillac lots, because with its appetite for fuel and paltry interior space, it's not a vehicle anyone will buy as an engineering triumph."

Though the Cadillac Escalade isn't cheap, most reviewers agree that it offers a good value within its class. Edmunds notes that in the realm of full-size luxury SUVs, "the 2007 Cadillac Escalade excels. Like-priced competitors such as the Infiniti QX56 and Lincoln Navigator may edge it out in one area or another, but overall the Escalade is a superior vehicle." Consumer Guide gave the 2007 Escalade its "Recommended" rating, while Edmunds says "paying a lot more money for a Lexus LX 470 or Land Rover Range Rover is an exercise in diminishing returns. Unless you're an avid off-roader, these vehicles provide little if any worthwhile benefit over the Escalade." Despite these and other accolades, IntelliChoice has not yet rated the 2008 Escalade, but gave the 2007 base model a value rating of "average" for its predicted five-year cost of ownership compared to other vehicles in its class.

The Escalade can seat up to eight people and comes in three models: the Escalade, Escalade ESV (an extended version) and the Escalade EXT (which trades the third row seat and enclosed cargo area for a short truck bed).

Escalade Performance - 8.4 (Very Good)

Test drivers find the 2008 Cadillac Escalade to be an able performer that offers a smooth ride, V8 power and handling in line with its size. Motor Week says the Escalade offers a "driving experience that's as close to a premium luxury sedan as any SUV we've ever tried."

Escalade Exterior - 9.3 (Excellent)

While the Escalade is known for its over-the-top styling, many writers believe the Escalade's 2007 redesign takes the SUV into more elegant territory. But it's still an Escalade, and as the test driver at the Kansas City Star put it, has "so much chrome that it was hard for me not to blush while I was driving it."

Escalade Interior - 8.6 (Very Good)

The luxurious and spacious interior of the 2008 Cadillac Escalade receives mostly favorable reviews. With the seating for up to eight people and a host of luxury features standard, the Escalade can transport a crowd in comfort and style.

Escalade Safety - 9.8 (Excellent)

The 2008 Cadillac Escalade does very well in federal government crash tests. It also offers safety features similar to others in its class. c

Escalade Reliability - 4.0 (Mediocre)

The 2008 Cadillac Escalade reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). The Escalade comes with GM's new 10-year/100,000-mile transferable powertrain warranty, which matches the warranty of many imports and lasts longer than those of the typical luxury cars
