Brooklyn Car Rentals and the Hudson River

The Hudson River is a river running through New York State that partly forms the border between New York and New Jersey. It was called the Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk in Mahican, the language spoken by the natives who lived in the area before it was settled by the Europeans. It means "the river that flows both ways". Today the river is named for Henry Hudson, and Englishman who explored the area in 1609. Early European settlement tended to cluster around the river. The beauty of the river inspired the Hudson River School of paining, a type of early American pastoral idyll. If you are nearby with a Brooklyn car rental stop and take a look at this beautiful river.

The source of the Hudson River is Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains in northeastern New York. However, it is known by different names until it reaches Tahawus at Henderson Lake. The Hudson flows into the Atlantic Ocean between Manhattan and New Jersey, forming New York Harbor. Strong tides make the New York Harbor difficult to navigate, and it is even more dangerous in the winter when ice floats develop.

If you would like to take your Brooklyn car rental for a drive along the Hudson, there are some notable landmarks. For example, there is West Point, the New Jersey Palisades, Hudson River Islands State Park, Liberty State Park. The Hudson Valley is very beautiful to look at if you decide to drive through it with your Brooklyn car rental. It is sometimes called the "American Rhine", and was designated as one of the American Heritage Rivers in 1997.

Exploring the River by Boat

One of the best ways to see the Hudson River and the Hudson Valley (if you don't want to take your Brooklyn car rental) is by river cruise. There are many sightseeing cruises that will take you on your journey up the river and back. In the summer you can smell the river and the blossoms on the flowers.

Hudson River Park

The Hudson River Park is the largest open-space development in Manhattan since Central Park was completed. It extends for five miles along the Manhattan shoreline from Battery Park to West 59th Street. Here you can participate in walking tours, boat tours, and educational programs in the arts, civics, ecology, health and physical education, history, government, journalism, science, and many other areas. Parking f your Brooklyn car rental is available nearby. There are facilities for basketball, baseball, batting, biking, kayaking, fishing, golf, ice skating, rock climbing, running, soccer, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. There are docks available if you decide to take a boat in. There is also a museum, gardens, historic ships, nature centers, a skate park, and a trapeze. There is so much to do at Hudson River Park that you wont want to leave!

The Hudson River is a beautiful river starting in the northern area of the state and running down to Manhattan where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. You can drive through the Hudson Valley with your Brooklyn car rental, or take a cruise up the river. If you would like to stay a little closer to Manhattan, then you can enjoy the Hudson River Park.
