Cheap Car Rentals and Napeague State Park
Napeague State Park is a park of 1364 acres on both sides of the Montauk Highway (Route 27) found between Amagansett and Montauk. It is very easy to get to with a cheap car rental. The land was initially purchased by the Nature Conservancy and given to the State of New York in 1986. It is made up mostly of wetlands in the areas that the waves from the Great Hurricane of 1938 created when the land was washed out. There is not a lot found at this park in terms of camping or things to do. It is administered by Hither Hills State Park. There is very nice beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean , but it is usually closed during the summer because endangered Piping Plover nest near there.
Within the park there is a huge abandoned Smith Meal fish factory. Some wanted to start ferry service in a nearby area across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut. There is no service connecting the South Fork to Connecticut, where there are two casinos. There is only one service on the North Fork, but residents in the area say it causes too many traffic jams. For now the only way to get there is by ferry service in Nassau County or from the South Fork. Or, you can drive to Connecticut with your cheap car rental.
Hither Hills: A Nearby Park with A Lot to Do
Located near Napeague State Park in Montauk, Hither Hills was named as one of Reserve America's Top Outdoor Locations in 2005 and it is easy to get to with a cheap car rental. There are scenic picnic areas with fireplaces, sport fishing, beachfront, playing fields, a playground, and 168 camp sites on the ocean. Anglers can fish all year, as well as obtain permits for night fishing. There are unique dunes called "walking dunes" in Napeague Harbor that are found on the eastern part of the park.
Hither Hills State Park offers a lot for you to do once you get out of your cheap car rental. You can bring your dogs, but they are only allowed in certain areas of the park on a leash not more than six feet. They are not allowed in camping, bathing, and picnic areas, as well as in buildings or on walkways. There is a beach, a camper recreation area, hiking trails, picnic tables, recreation programs, biking trails, campsites, fishing, hunting, playgrounds, showers, a bridle path, food, nature trails, playing fields, tent/trailer sites. In the winter there is also cross-country skiing available. Empire Passports are accepted. These include family movies, folk & line dancing, children's summer theater, magic shows and various environmental interpretation programs. In the summer every Thursday from 9:30a.m. to 10:30a.m. there is also a sandcastle contest from the end of June to the end of August on the beach. Participants can use sand, water, and any other material that is found on the beach and is native. Hither Hills is a great place to stay if you are interested in staying in the area around Napeague State Park with your cheap car rental.
