Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park covers 400 acres in Oyster Bay. Visit this former estate of insurance and railroad executive William Robertson Coe with your cheap car rental to see the historic house, greenhouses, gardens, paths, and plant collections. Here you will find an herbarium with over 10,000 pressed specimens. The name "Planting Fields" comes from the Matinecock Indians who cultivated the soil in the clearings above Long Island Sound.
The historic house has many original pieces and furnishings that belonged to the Coe family, including the completely restored Louis XVI Reception Room. This Tudor Revival mansion has a mostly Elizabethan style interior. There are wood an stone carvings, ironwork, 13th - 19th century stained glass windows, and murals by American artists. The museum is open from April to October with guided tours in the early afternoon. The cost is $5 for adults and $3.50 for seniors and students. Children under 6 are free, and children under 12 are $1. Parking for your cheap car rental is also $6. The tour lasts about an hour.
There are two greenhouses on the property that are open to the public. The Main Greenhouse includes a collection of orchids, cacti, begonias, palms, ferns, and hibiscus. There are also seasonal events such as poinsettias, Easter lilies, chrysanthemums, and coleus. The Main Greenhouse is open all year from 10:00a.m. to 4:30p.m. There is no fee for parking for your cheap car rental from November to the end of March.
The Camellia Greenhouse has the largest collection of camellias in a greenhouse in the Northeast. Blossoms appear December through March, so it is a great place to visit in the winter too. The Camellia Greenhouse is open all year from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. When the camellias are in bloom, don't forget there is no parking fee for your cheap car rental.
Planting Fields has been called "a perfect retreat for horticulturists, history and design enthusiasts, and visitors looking for peace or state of the art gardening solutions". The five acre garden with superior trees and shrubs. They are even arranged in alphabetical order by botanical name. There are over 500 types of plants here. And the Synoptic Garden offers an educational experience for all that come.
Special events include Shakespeare in the Park. There are two performances at the end of July if you are in the area with your cheap car rental. For 2006 the performances are The Taming of the Shrew. In the winter there is also a holiday tree lighting and a visit by Santa Claus in early December. You can sip hop apple cider and see the poinsettia display in the Main Greenhouse if you are here.

With your cheap car rental, take the I-495 east for almost 24 miles until you reach Exit 40 going toward Syosset. You will then take the Jericho Turnpike until you can merge onto the NY-106 north toward Oyster Bay. Exit at Oyster Bay. The arboretum in on Planting Fields Road.
