Cheap Car Rentals and Camp Hero State Park
Camp Hero was a military base at Montauk Point on the eastern tip of Long Island. However, today it is owned by the New York Department of Parks and today is Camp Hero State Park. Once you get out of your cheap car rental you will find a beach, fishing, hiking, horse back riding, biking, and cross-country skiing in the winter.
An Important Location
This park is interesting to visit with your cheap car rental because it has such an interesting history behind it. This location was important to the military because of its location. In the American Revolution it was part of the Battle of Long Island. During World War One, the location was a strategic location between two major American cities and it was thought it might be a location for an invasion.
Just before World War Two, the government established Fort Hero at this location, just South of the Montauk Lighthouse. This area was threatened by German U-boats threatening the East Coast and it was thought this might be a possible invasion point. The military base was built like a typical New England fishing village to hide it from enemies that might be spying on the base. The concrete bunkers even had windows painted on them with ornamental roofs with fake dormers. The gym was made to look like a church complete with a fake steeple.
The base was maintained through the Cold War until the 1980s when it was decommissioned. At first is was attempted to be sold to real estate developers, but environmental activists protested and were able to get it for the New York State Department of Parks.
There are plans to put a museum and interpretive center in the park that will focus on World War Two and the Cold War. This is a great place to visit with your cheap car rental.
What to Do
Once you get out of your cheap car rental there is a lot to do here. Located on 415 acres of land, there is a lot of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean. You will find diverse ecosystems, including maritime forests, freshwater wetlands, ocean vistas, and dramatic bluffs. There are trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as some of the best surf fishing in the world. The park is open 24 hours for those fishermen with permits too!
Directions
With your cheap car rental take Route 27, the Sunrise Highway, east all the way to the end. It is about 130 miles from New York City, and very easy to get to with your cheap car rental.
Montauk
Montauk is also home to The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum, which is a National Maritime Historic Landmark. It includes a museum, tower, and gift shop. It is at the site of the oldest lighthouse on Long Island, and the oldest in the state as well. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children, and $6 for seniors.
