Who Was Walt Whitman?

Walt Whitman was an American poet born in Huntington, Long Island on May 31, 1819. He taught at a few different schools throughout the western part of Long Island until he was 22. He also wrote conventional poetry, short stories, and a novel in this time. Whitman was a journalist until 1859. He was an outspoken advocate of social, economic, and political reform on both local and national issues. In 1855, Whitman published the Leaves of Grass, a book of poetry. Although it did not sell very many copies, it was highly praised by intellectuals such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and progressive Americans.
During the American Civil War, worked as a nurse. A stroke in 1873 forced him to move back to New York with his family. However his experience as a nurse and in Washington helped him with his writing. Instead of being just a poet for Long Island, he was now a poet for the nation. By the time Whitman died, he was the first American poet to be known around the world. When you drive your cheap car rental to visit the park you can learn more about this great American. Their mission is t o "preserve the birthplace of and to conduct programs which bring poetry to the public in the democratic spirit of Walt Whitman". In 1957 the land was designated a New York State Historic Site, and in 1985 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is run as a partnership between the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

With your cheap car rental take the Long Island Expressway to exit 49N. Go north 1.8 miles, then turn left on Old Walt Whitman Road. Or you can take the Jericho Turnpike with your cheap car rental to Route 110S and proceed south for 1/2 mile. Turn right onto Old Walt Whitman Road.
