The Hempstead House offers you a fun look at the historic Gold Coast with your cheap car rental. This house was originally built by Howard Gould, and was later the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim. The vaulted ceiling and stairs as you walk into the entrance will take your breath away. In the 1920s the Hempstead House was a place of extravagance, a place for high society. In the entrance, there was an oak organ. You can still see the pipes, but they are just for show. There were medieval tapestries on the walls and oriental carpets on the floor. Outside in the sunken Palm Court there were 150 species of rare orchids and other plants. There was an aviary of exotic birds in ornate cages among the flowers. The library was copied from King James I with portraits of literary figures that are still there. The Billiard Room had a gold leaf ceiling with woodwork from a 17th century Spanish palace. Stone gargoyles danced around the ceiling in the Summer Living Room. The Guggenheims had stained and leaded glass, red velvet draperies, Flemish tapestries, and artwork by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and Rubens. At the height of its time, the estate employed 17 house servants, numerous farmers and groundskeepers, a golf pro, a tennis pro, and a riding master. After Daniel Guggenheim died, the building were given to the navy by his wife for a training center. In the 1940s extensive changes were made to the inside of the buildings. The original lead glass roof was removed from the Palm Court and acoustic tile and fluorescent lighting were installed to meet Navy code. Today most of the Navy's modifications have been removed. The house is now operated by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums. Although it is not in its completely original condition, this is a great place to see with your cheap car rental.
Reopening in the Spring of 2006, Falaise is one of the last few intact historic houses on Long Island's Gold Coast. This house was built for Harry F. Guggenheim and his wife Caroline Morton in 1923. The design is based on a 13th century Norman manor house. There is an enclosed cobblestone courtyard, thickly mortared brick walls, steeply pitched roofs of heavy tile, and a round tower. The atmosphere is medieval, with arches, thick wood beams, textured plastered walls, and carved stone mantels. There are many 16th and 17th century antiques such as wood carvings, sculptures, Renaissance paintings, and important pieces of modern art. When Harry married Alicia Patterson in 1939, they founded Newsday, Long Island's daily newspaper. This is a beautiful place to see when you visit with your cheap car rental.
Directions
To get to Sands Point Preserve with your cheap car rental, take the Long Island Expressway to Exit 36 - Searingtown Road North. Searingtown Road becomes Port Washington Boulevard and then Middleneck Road. You will go straight for 6 miles with your cheap car rental to the entrance.
