Conversion Van Rentals and Long Island Horse Racing

Horse racing on Long Island has a long and sometimes suspicious history. Horse racing can vary by the style of racing, the distances and the events depending on which county it is being held in. In the United States, races often occur on a flat surface of dirt or grass, usually for 905 or 2414 meters. The best-known race in the United States is the Kentucky Derby. Bets are allowed through legal providers, as long as the person making the bet is of the legal age to gamble in that state where the bet is being made. Most of the races in the United States are thoroughbred competitions, although there are others that occur. There is a lot of horse racing on Long Island within a short distance of where you are staying with a conversion van rental. Horse racing got a real start on Long Island at the end of the Great Depression when George Morton Levy wanted to popularize it in the area in 1939. However, with the Depression just ending and the war starting, there was not a lot of interest in a sport where people had to travel a remote location at night. Levy had a dream of making over the sport to make it more appealing to common people rather than the elite sport that it once was. So he made the events take place at night and raced all horses in a single dash. Levy had a lot of problems initially, but after a few rough years he began to see profits. In 1946 he introduced automatic starting gates, and the gates opened with people coming to see the races. They would bring their families as a family event and sometimes bet. Horse racing was also profitable for the wealthy because of the illegal bets being made. Until the 1970s, horse racing was extremely popular all over Long Island. But it soon began to decline after that. It is still a popular sport today, but not at the same level it once enjoyed.

Gallop to the Races

Belmont Park celebrated its 100th anniversary last year as a premier place for horse racing on Long Island and the largest track of its kind in the country. Located in Hauppauge, a hamlet only 50 miles from Manhattan, this is a short drive in a conversion van rental. Beginning in mid-May, events take place throughout the summer including the Belmont Stakes racing season. Special events include Breakfast at Belmont, which offers fans a chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at the world of racing. Or, take a guided tram tour of the stable area, listen to Mary Ryan's trackside commentary and see Shelia Lindquist's Paddock Demonstration all for free. There is also an optional trackside breakfast at a reasonable price. Finally, everyone attending gets a free Belmont Park stadium seat cushion and on Sundays there is variety of entertainment for children. Parking is available for your conversion rental van here.

A Classic Event

If you will be traveling in the Hamptons area with your conversion van rental around the labor day weekend, you might want to check out the Hampton Classic exhibiting 1400 horses to over 40,000 spectators. This weekend is not just about horse racing though, There are over 60 vendors to browse with everything from antiques to toys to houseware and fashion. This is a top-rated social event for the area, taking place in Bridgehampton. You can be sure to have fun once you arrive in your conversion van rental, so plan to stay for most of the day!

Long Island has plenty of horse racing to keep you occupied on your vacation with a conversion van rental. More information and specific locations for race tracks can be found at http://www.licvb.com/sub_cats.cfm?ID=32.
