Passenger Van Rentals and Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum

The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum is a National Maritime Historic Landmark, including a museum, tower, and gift shop. Located at the tip of Long Island, it is at the site of the oldest lighthouse on Long Island, and the oldest in the state as well. The drive here with your passenger van rental is worth it to learn about American history. The lighthouse was completed in 1796 on the site where the Royal Navy (Britain) had built signal bonfires for its ships during the American Revolution. George Washington commissioned a lighthouse to be built there when many ships were ruined on the reefs at the end of the island. It is interesting to note that the lighthouse was originally built 297 feet from the edge of the bluff, but erosion has had a huge effect on the area and the lighthouse is now only 50 feet from the edge. Almost $1 million has been spent on the site to protect it from future erosion by brining in boulders and terracing the site. While the Coast Guard operates the beacon, the grounds and visitor center are maintained by the Montauk Historical Society. If you drive out to the easternmost tip of Long Island with your passenger van rental, you will find the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum. Throughout the summer the museum is open throughout the week during the day, weather permitting. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children, and $6 for seniors. Parking is available for your passenger van rental.

Life at the Edge of the Atlantic

If you venture out to Montauk with your passenger van rental, you will be given an exciting tour of the facilities and an idea of what life was like for those with the important job of keeping the lighthouse. The tour starts in the Double Keepers Dwelling, where the head keeper and his family lived in the south apartment, while the two assistants lived in the north apartments. They all shared a single kitchen in the basement. Next is the Oil Room, where the oil was stored for the lantern. This was connected to the keepers dwelling in 1860. The Lighthouse Tower is the next stop. Completed in 1796 it is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. In 1860, the height of the tower was increased and a larger lantern room was added for a First Order Fresnel Lens. The Fog Signal House originally contained the engines and compressors for a dual siren fog signal, but now has automated equipment. The Fire Control Station was added during World War II as part of a defense shield. Next stop is Look Out Point. From here you can see Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Block Island. The second Oil House was built in 1904 for fuel for the generators of a navy radio station. The 1838 Keepers Dwelling replaced the original one, but was replaced soon after by the Double Keepers Dwelling. This dwelling was converted to a barn. The Meadow is a protected hollow at the foot of Turtle Hill for the dwellers to harvest vegetables while they lived at the site. Finally, you stop at Turtle Cove Look Out and you can see the Atlantic Ocean. The Museum, located in the 1860 Keepers House also offers tours with a look at the life of those who lived there. It includes many historical documents and photographs as well.

This exciting piece of history is easily accessible with a passenger van rental and you can learn a lot about the local history. Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum is great for kids and adults.
