and the New York Aquarium

Are you looking for Manhattan car rentals getaway that will be fun and enjoyable for the entire family? Than look no further than the New York Aquarium! As the only aquarium in New York City and part of the largest network of metropolitan wildlife parks in the country, the New York Aquarium offers 14-acres of aquatic fun! You and your loved ones can enjoy over 8,000 animals in both indoor and outdoor naturalistic exhibits.

How it Began

The Aquarium first opened it's doors on December 10th, 1896 in lower Manhattan or what is now known as Battery Park, making it the oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States. On October 31st, 1902, the Aquarium was adopted into the care of what was then the New York Zoological Society. At the time, the Aquarium housed only 150 specimens of wildlife. Today, as the issue of wildlife conservation becomes increasingly important, the Aquarium does it part by taking on a vision of a world where people understand the critical role the oceans play in human survival and the sensitivity of aquatic resources. Through various education programs offered, the Aquarium strives to encourage people to place a high personal priority on the protection of marine and freshwater ecosystems and the rich diversity of aquatic wildlife, which they sustain.

What to Expect at the New York Aquarium

Upon entering the Aquarium, you'll find the Aquarium's first exhibit building the Conservation Hall. Here is where you will find the marine life of the Caribbean Glover's Reef ecosystem including jawfish, moray eels, sharks, and more than 35 other species! Not only can you view them from a distance, but you can also get a chance to feel like one of the sea creatures by taking a swim in the new 165,000-gallon tank!

The other exhibits of this hall focus on Wildlife Conservation Society research in the lab and in the field. Some of the species you'll see are highly endangered in nature and exist only because of the conservation work of the Aquarium.

As you make your way down the wooden boardwalk you will encounter the exhibition entitled Explore the Shore (ETS). The ETS exhibit contains a series of interactive, educational galleries that teach you about some of the wonders of the ocean and its inhabitants. Here you will see local wildlife thriving in the Salt Marsh, a newly renovated exhibit that recreates a swath of the famous Jamaica Bay wetlands. This landscape contains living salt marsh grass with sheepshead minnows and invertebrates such as hermit crabs and horseshoe crabs, with an underwater view.

This is only a taste of what is in store for you when you visit the New York Aquarium during your Manhattan car rental vacation!

Before you Go..

Take a moment at the end of your journey at the Aquarium for a photo-op with the orca and life-size walrus sculptures or stand next to the viewing glass, where you can take your picture with a real walrus.
