New York City Car Rentals and the New York Knicks
The New York Knicks are a basketball team in the NBA based in New York. They play at Madison Square Garden. They are one of only to original teams that are still located in its original city (the other is the Boston Celtics). They are a great team to see when you are in town with a New York City car rental.
What's in the Name?
The term knickerbockers comes from a word for men's or boy's baggy knee trousers that were popular in the early 20th century. They were popular for baseball players and in other sports at the time as well. Knickerbocker also refers to a descendent of the original Dutch settlers of the south end of Manhattan that used to be part of New Amsterdam.
Great Basketball
The Knicks first played on November 1, 1946 in the Basketball Association of America's first ever game. The Knicks were a very strong team in their early years, with extremely strong players playing for them. It was in these early years that they gained a lot of respect from their fans.
The period from 1960 to 1966 was tough for the Knicks. They finished last in the NBA's Eastern Division each year. They acquired a few great players in the late 1960s. They went on to win championship titles in 1970 and 1971.
In 1985, the Knicks got a first round draft pick in the first-ever NBA Drafty Lottery. They picked Patrick Ewing, a highly sought-after pick. Ewing led the rookies in scoring and rebounds. Although they did not go to the playoffs that year, the 1987-1988 season was much better for the Knicks. In 1992, 1993, and 1994 the Knicks won championships with Ewing on the team. They were quite a strong team with a lot of energy. After the 1999-2000 season, Ewing left the Knicks and a new era began.
Today the Knicks have one of the highest payrolls in the NBA, but one of the worst teams. They are generally seen as a poorly run team, being the butt of many jokes on late night television. Although they might not be the best team in the NBA, they are still a great team to see with your New York City car rental. They have many very loyal fans who make the game very exciting.
Directions
Madison Square Garden is located on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets. If you are coming with your New York City car rental, take any of the bridges, tunnels, or road from outside Manhattan. There is parking at 230 West 31st Street, 325 West 34th Street, and 441 9th Avenue. It might be easier to take the subway or train. This way you do not have to worry about parking your New York City car rental. The train will take you right to Penn Station at Madison Square Garden. Or, take the 1, 2, or 3 (Seventh Avenue Lines), A, C or E (Eighth Avenue Subway) to 34th Street/Penn Station. There is also B, D, F, N, Q, R or Path to 34th Street/Avenue of the Americas (one block walk).
Madison Square Garden is a great place to see a great basketball team play a game or two while you are in New York with a car rental.
