Founded in 1842 by Ureli Corelli Hill, the Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York played its first concert on December 7, 1842. The Philharmonic was very successful, and their popularity grew throughout the 19th century. While the Philharmonic plays a lot of classical music, they are also well-known for commissioning modern pieces from composers. They were the first major orchestra to give a live radio broadcast, although the Detroit Symphony Orchestra also makes the same claim. In 1928, the Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York merged with its major rival, the New York Symphony Orchestra. The name then changed to its current name, the New York Philharmonic. The orchestra was officially housed at Carnegie Hall until 1962, when it moved to its current location at Avery Fisher Hall, part of the Lincoln Center where they will remain for the near future.
