Located in the county of Suffolk, Ronkonkoma is one of the New York State's bigger cities with a population of approximately twenty thousand. Vanderbilt II's 48-mile Long Island Motor Parkway. Even though racing had been an established sport in Europe, with major competitions such as Gordon Bennett Cup, the Vanderbilt cup is the first major trophy in American auto racing. An international competition, its inaugural race was awash with controversy as politicians and concerned citizens of nearby New York used legal action and public hearings to stop the race. Even with the public outcry the event was a success, unfortunately poor crowd control was a problem from it's inception ,exasperated by the fact no Americans won the race in the first three years, the race was canceled when a spectator was killed in 1906. The race track was built as an attempt to provide safety and increase traffic to the race. But the side of Ronkonkoma that is the most fun to explore is the myth of the lake. The lake at Ronkonkoma is New Island's largest fresh water lake. Created by retreating glaciers, the lake is a great destination to see in your cheap car rental. Some say the lake is bottomless. There is an old Indian legend that says there was a princess that belonged to the tribe of Secatogue who fell in love with a prince from the tribe of Poospatuck. The problem was that the two tribes lived on opposite sides of the lake and were bitter enemies. One day the prince and princess snuck off to the middle of the lake where they made love. The spirits were not happy about this and sunk the boat the two lovers were in and they fell forever down the bottomless lake. Now the prince and princess have become vengeful spirits and every year at least one young couple dies on the lake and their spirits are dragged down to the bottomless lake with them.

Regardless of what people say, it is a site to see. Just ask Maude Adams, a prominent Broadway actress that was so captured by the beauty of the lake that in 1898 that she bought 700 acres of land near the lake. It later became known as The Cenacle, one of the Island's most prominent farms. It is yet another great place to visit in Ronkonkoma in your cheap car rentals.
