Car Rentals in New York City and South Street Seaport
The South Street Seaport is a historic area of Manhattan that can be found where Fulton Street ends at the East River. It is located right next to the Financial District, but is considered a historical district. It has some of the oldest architecture downtown, including renovated original mercantile buildings from the 19th century, renovated sailing ships, the old Fulton Fish Market. When you come down with your car rental in New York City you will find great places to shop, excellent places to eat, and a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Going Back in Time
The South Street Seaport was the center of shipping for New York City between 1815 and 1860 (today the shipping center is in the Bronx). The area was built up to cater to sailors' needs.
At Pier 17 you will find bumpy cobblestone streets with a lot of interesting things to do. The South Street Seaport Museum was founded in 1967 to promote conservation and educate people about the Seaport from 1820-1860. The buildings in the neighborhood will make you think you went back in time to the mid-19th century. You will find some historical vessels, including the Flying P-Liner, Peking, and other museum ships. Walking along the pier is free, but tours of the ships requires you to pay an admission fee. Every Sunday in the summer there is Argentine Tango dancing as well! Come on down with your car rental in New York City to check out the South Street Seaport.
There is a very interesting exhibition at the Seaport that you will want to be sure to catch when you come down with your car rental in New York City. It is called "Bodies, The Exhibition". It will give you the opportunity to see first-hand the inner workings of our bodies through preserved specimens. Some people may want to look into this exhibit a bit before going because there has been some controversy over the exhibit which features real bodies donated to science. There are 22 whole bodies and 260 additional organ and partial body specimens that are part of this exhibit.
If you are interested in seeing a Broadway, off Broadway, or other production, try stopping by TKTS to get some great deals on same-day tickets to some of the biggest plays in New York City. Come with cash or travelers checks though, because they don't accept credit cards!
Shop til You Drop
There are many great stores at Pier 17 that are located within the shopping center there. Come on down with your car rental in New York City to shop at great stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor, Bath & Body Works, Cabana, Coach, EB Games, Express, Express Men, Foot Locker, Guess?, J. Crew, Victoria's Secret, and many more stores there. There are always lots of things going on here, with sales and other promotional events.
Fabulous Eats
After all that shopping, you will defiantly want to grab something to eat before heading home in your car rental in New York City. The Historic Cobble Stone District has some really great restaurant to try, such as A Bite to Eat, Heartland Brewery & Beer Hall, Il Porto, J.P. Mustard, and many more. You will have a lot of energy after such a great meal and be ready to continue with your New York trip in your car rental in New York City.
