Location
The estate is located in Centerport on a 43-acre estate. It is just over an hour away from Manhattan with a 15 passenger van rental.
Exhibitions
"Exhibition and program themes focus upon Long Island's Gold Coast Era and upon William K. Vanderbilt II's desire that his marine, natural history, and ethnographic collections promote appreciation and understanding of the marvelous diversity of life, other cultures, and scientific knowledge". Among the various exhibitions are the marine museum, natural history habitats, seaplane hanger, boathouse, and ethnographic objects. Collections
The present collection contains over 30,000 objects to support the museum's goal. There are interpretive programs in the mansion to explore the social history of the area, and natural history dioramas are used for research on issues such as environmental responsibility. This is a unique opportunity to explore the area with a 15 passenger van rental.
Tours
Living tours are given Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through October. Or, if you have a large group in your rental 15 passenger van, tour may be arranged by calling ahead. The tours take visitors to the year 1936 on the Gold Coast. Guides will share their experiences, opinions, and lifestyle on the Vanderbilt family.
Planetarium
The Vanderbilt Planetarium is the largest facility of its kind on Long Island and includes a 60-foot domed Sky Theater. On Friday nights, there is an opportunity to look at the sky through large telescopes.
For kids, there are a number of educational programs about the planetarium that run for two hours. Teachers can arrange special tours and programs for every age group. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn about the nighttime sky.
Teachers can rent 15 passenger vans to transport students to and from the estate.
