An American Poet
Walt Whitman was an American poet born in Huntington, Long Island on May 31, 1819. Whitman took a job at a young age and educated himself as he worked at a printer, The Long Island Patriot. When a depression hit, Whitman was forced to return to Long Island to live with his parents. He stayed there until he was 22. During this time he taught at a few different schools throughout the western part of Long Island. He also wrote conventional poetry, short stories, and a novel in this time. He founded The Long-Islander, a weekly newspaper, in 1838, but he sold it a year later. Whitman remained a journalist full-time until 1859. He was an outspoken advocate of social, economic, and political reform in both local and national issues.
In 1855, Whitman published the Leaves of Grass, a volume of poetry that was highly innovative. Although it did not sell very many copies, it was highly praised by intellectuals such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and progressive Americans.
During the American Civil War, Whitman looked for his wounded brother in the field hospitals. When he saw what the wounded were going through, he moved to Washington, D.C. and got a job at the Department of the Interior working as a nurse. A stroke in 1873 forced him to move closer to his family. However his experience as a nurse and in Washington helped him with his new works. Instead of being just a poet for long Island, he was now a poet for the nation. In 1881 he began to gain fame with the seventh printing of Leaves of Grass. Whitman was corresponding with other literary greats such as Alfred Lord Tennyson, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde. By the time Whitman died, he was the first American poet to have international acclaim. Learn more about this great American poet when you visit the museum with your cheap car rental.
